TASD Reminds Public that Property Taxes are Due April 1

March 26, 2009

The Full Story

The Tax Administration Services Department (TASD), is reminding property owners that Property Tax payments for 2009/2010 are due on Wednesday, April 1.
Payments may be made at any of the 29 tax offices across the island; online at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm or via the electronic drop boxes installed at major tax offices for cheque payments only.
Director of Public Relations at the TASD, Meris Haughton, in advising on how to go about making payments, has suggested online payment as an excellent option for persons who are overseas, because they can make the payment from anywhere, once they have a credit card.
“All they need to do is log on to the website, select the option for the online service and make their payments. They would need to have the valuation number of the property, however. Once they have those in place, then they can make their payments from anywhere, at their convenience, day or night,” Miss Haughton told JIS News.
She noted that, regardless of which option is chosen, payments can be made in full, half yearly, or in quarterly instalments. Half-yearly installments are due on April 1 and October 1, while quarterly installments are to be paid by April 1, July 1, October 1, and January 1. Any payments not made in full, or first installment made by April 30, will attract a 10 per cent penalty.
In anticipation of the usual last minute rush, the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), will extend opening hours at six of its busier locations on Monday, March 30 and again on Tuesday, March 31.
The offices located at King Street, Constant Spring and Cross Roads in Kingston, Portmore, St. Catherine, Montego Bay, St. James and St. Ann’s Bay, St. Ann will be open until 5 p.m. on those days. Portmore residents have the option of paying at their tax office on Saturdays, because the Portmore Tax office opens every Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The TASD is also reminding persons that arrears for previous years are overdue and are to be paid now. For more information call the TASD’s local toll free line at: 1-888-TAX-HELP (1- 888 – 829-4357) or for the U.S. 1-888-GO-JATAX (1-888-46-52829).
