Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon. Robert Montague, has lauded staff members at the Transport Authority (TA) for the agency achieving a 14 per cent increase in delivering road licences.

Mr. Montague, who addressed the staff at a recent awards luncheon via a video presentation, at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, in New Kingston, encouraged them to “continue the good work.”

“We are here to celebrate you for the hard work that you have put in to make the last licensing period so wonderful, and to lift the Transport Authority to being one of the better agencies in Government,” the Minister said.

During the period February 12, 2018 to March 31, 2018, the TA processed 36,710 applications or 4,471 more than the similar period last year.

In an interview with JIS News, Managing Director of the TA, Cecil Morgan, outlined that last year the Authority processed 10,000 licences over its usual 50,000, and with $15,000 per licence, the agency was able to earn a “fair amount of money.”

“That has put us in a more comfortable financial position, and we thought it was important to say thanks to the staff for the effort (and) the work that they had done, and continue to do,” the Managing Director said.

He added that the gesture should be a motivation for continued success at the TA, and shortly other departments will be rewarded, and they will modify the way “we do business, so that we can improve our processes and service delivery to the customers.”

Mr. Morgan told the staff to see the recognition as a “landmark” opportunity to move higher and to achieve greater success in the years to come.

The TA has a mission to be impartial in the enforcement of all laws, regulations and agreements relating to public land transportation; to closely and effectively monitor the system; and to attract and maintain an efficient, courteous and knowledgeable workforce to improve the quality of service.
