The Full Story

The parish of St. Catherine took home a massive haul of prizes at the 54th annual staging of the Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show, which ended recently in May Pen, Clarendon.
The parish won the coveted Rudolph Burke Trophy for best parish pavilion as well as eight of 10 sectional prizes. St. James took second place in this competition, while Westmoreland placed third. St. Catherine also won second place in the competition for overall Champion Parish.
In an interview with JIS News, Acting Parish Manager for St. Catherine, Cardia Duhaney said, “we’re overwhelmed, by our success.”
She added that her camp was extremely happy as St. Catherine last won the parish pavilion prize about 10 years ago. She noted that the parish’s preparations for Denbigh began late, and it was challenging to get financial support.
However, with the perseverance and hard work of extension officers and parish managers of the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), farmers and other individuals and organisations, St. Catherine was able to excel.
The parish’s display featured ornamental fishing, food produced in the parish as well as a waterfall, all arranged very creatively.
Sectional prizes won by the parish were in the areas of Agribusiness, Home Economics, Education, Marketing, Outstanding Feature, Co-operative Community Development, Adaptable Technology, and Initiative in Using Resources.
St. James was awarded the sectional prize for Youth in Agriculture, while Westmoreland received the prize for Environmental Sustainability.
Miss Duhaney said that her parish would be working to retain the Rudolph Burke Trophy next year as well as to win the overall prize for Champion Parish.
