The Full Story

The Scientific Research Council (SRC) has committed its support to student entrepreneurs of the Papine High School in St. Andrew, following their call for approval of their personal-care products.

Executive Director of the SRC, Dr. Charah Watson, said assistance will be given to ensure that the students are successful in their shampoo and lotion project and any future enterprise that they might establish.

“I am inspired by them. The Jamaica Business Development Corporation and Jamaica Intellectual Property Office are two of our partners that we encourage them to seek audience with, and we will be supporting them in making the connections,” she told JIS News.

The shampoo and lotion project is a partnership among students Akiem Thompson, Migu Spencer and Alex Ricketts and Chemistry Teacher, Keniesha Warren-Sterling from the school’s Agriculture and Science Department.

Through this initiative, the students have made cosmetic products from an excess supply of cucumber grown on the school’s farm.

Dr. Watson informed that the Council has already met with the collaborators and the Head of the Department of Agriculture and Science at Papine High, Denise Moore-Scott.

“The SRC is here to support them and lend guidance. These are three young men from three very different communities. They are a part of something that initially they did not have any idea that they would have been a part of. The teacher made the call, they responded, and the rest is something that I am looking forward to seeing how far it could go,” she said.

The Executive Director said the SRC is considering more ways to assist the students.
