Seventh TAJ Employee Arrested in Missing Motor Vehicle Registration Certificates Investigation

May 21, 2013

The Full Story

As the Revenue Protection Division (RPD) continues its pursuit and investigation into the missing high value documents from the Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ), on April 19, 2013, officers from the Division arrested and charged Derrick Smalling, with one count each of Conspiracy to Defraud, breach of the Corruption Prevention Act and Falsification of Accounts.

The missing documents include motor vehicle registration certificates, blank Drivers Licences (Teslins) and blank motor vehicle titles.

Mr. Smalling, a cashier from the Savanna-La-Mar Tax Office, was charged with issuing substitute registration documents for motor vehicles, including a motor vehicle registration certificate – which was found on a motor vehicle other than the one it was issued for.

He is set to return to Court on July 9, 2013.

The RPD is reminding members of the public that the presentation of fraudulent documents is an offence and that the full force of the law will be brought to bear on the offenders.

The Division is also imploring members of the public who may have information regarding the possession, or use of motor vehicle documents suspected to be fraudulent, or information concerning suspected fraudulent activities as it relates to Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ), to contact the Revenue Protection Division at rpdinfo@mof.gov.jm or 1 – 888 – CALLRPD (225-5773).

Re-established as a division of the Ministry of Finance in June 2008, the RPD, as one of four entities under the Ministry’s Enforcement, Regulations and Compliance Programme, is specifically mandated to protect the Government’s Revenue through the enforcement of the Revenue and Customs laws, conducting investigations, minimizing corruption within the Revenue Services and fraud against the revenue, and improving the efficiency of revenue collection.
