June 16, 2008

The Full Story

Minister of State in the Ministry of Transport and Works, Joseph Hibbert, has said that a road maintenance master plan has been developed and is currently being reviewed by the Cabinet.
“Once Cabinet’s approval has been granted, the expenditure on our roads will ensure a gradual improvement to the entire network. In addition, there will be a general improvement to the geometric standards and a general upgrading of arterial roads to motorway standards; secondary roads to arterial standards; tertiary roads to secondary standards; and all bridle paths to tertiary standards,” Mr. Hibbert said during his contribution to the 2008/09 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday (June 11).
The master plan was developed through grant funding from the European Union.
The State Minister told the House that construction activities along the North Coast corridor were as a result of the decision by Government to improve the geometric standards of that roadway to arterial standards. Those works started at Negril and upon completion of Segment Three, will end at Port Antonio.
“It is intended, that the existing South Coast corridor will be designed and constructed to the same standards,” the State Minister said, pointing out that the Ministry has received and is considering proposals from a number of interested organizations.
