The St. James Municipal Corporation has paid homage to a cornerstone in the development of the Montego Bay Boys’ and Girls Club’ (MBBGC), Gladstone ‘Pop’ Lawrence, by renaming the River Bay Road in Montego Bay, in his honour.
Addressing the renaming ceremony held at the MBBGC on Thursday (January 25), Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Homer Davis urged the audience to gather inspiration from the patriarch to positively impact the lives of their fellow men.
“Let us be inspired by the work of and commit daily to improving the lives of our fellow citizens as we live in brotherhood and peace,” he stated.
Mr. Davis noted that it was time for the city to begin to segregate from a culture of negative street names.
“If I’m to look on the outer band of Montego Bay I see some names propping up which do not reflect our true identity, [like] Gaza, some names that you don’t even want to associate yourself with as a country,” he said.
Mr. Davis underscored that those who have diligently worked in positioning the country at the pinnacle in sports, music and academia must be recognised.
“We don’t identify and put forward our performers who have [performed] beyond the call of duty in most instances… we need to [acknowledge] how we can transform their history into an [indelible mark] as it relates to our city, let us not trivialize the contribution made by these people,” he noted.
