Research and Innovative Work Important for Social and Economic Advancement – Newby

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Senator Warren Newby, has underscored the importance of research and innovative work in the quest for social and economic advancement.
He was delivering the main address at the International Students’ Day function at the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) in Portland recently.
According to Senator Newby, small island states, such as Jamaica, will have to engage in research to find solutions to challenges such as global warming, the energy crisis, globalization, and food security. He said that the government is fully committed to supporting research dedicated to these efforts by providing incentives, among other things.
International Students’ Day is celebrated worldwide, as a symbol of youth empowerment. More than 1,000 students attended the event, which was hosted by the National Centre for Youth Development (NCYD) as part of activities to mark November as Youth Month.
This year’s observance promoted and highlighted research work by Jamaican tertiary level students.
A presentation on a study involving rats was made by students of the University of the West Indies; the Northern Caribbean University showcased special software innovations; University of Technology displayed its solar car; while CASE presented its solar hybrid energy generating system.
Senator Newby congratulated the NCYD for organizing the event, which he said is a celebration of the achievement of the country’s young people.
