Prime Minister Heads Delegation to Conference of Non-Aligned Movement

Cabinet has given its approval for a delegation, headed by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, to attend the 14th Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), in Havana, Cuba from September 11-16.
This was announced by Minister of Information and Development, Senator Colin Campbell at the post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House on September 4.
Giving details, the Information Minister said the Havana Summit would address the role and significance of the NAM, and is also expected to focus on current issues of interest to member states in the international environment.
“The summit will provide the opportunity for the Heads of Government and Senior NAM officials to exchange views on issues of peace and security, economic development and social progress. The Heads will consider other regional and sub-regional issues, to include Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan as well as territorial disputes between Guatemala and Belize and the United States embargo against Cuba,” he informed.
The Non-Aligned Movement, which meets every three years, is made up of 116 member states representing interests and priorities of developing countries.
Other members of the delegation include, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Anthony Hylton; Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Patricia Sinclair-McCalla; and Officer in charge of the Multi-lateral Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Ambassador Vilma McNeish.
