The Full Story

Portland’s 4-H Clubs will be staging their annual Achievement Day function at the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) on Wednesday, March 31.
The day’s activities will feature a number of competitive and sporting events, aimed at bringing the best performances out of the clubs and exciting the interest of patrons.
Among the events will be speech making, budding and grafting, circumposing and potting, pig care and management, rabbit care and management, poultry care and management, bee keeping, cake baking and decorating and sandwich making.
Sporting events will include domino playing, netball, football, and athletic competition.
The function will be held under the theme, “Youth Involvement in Local Production for Sustainability”, and 48 4-H Clubs in the parish are expected to participate in the event.
Speaking to the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) 4-H Parish Development Officer for Portland, Andre Anderson, said this year’s Achievement Day activities will be placing major focus on banana, to highlight the various products that can be derived from the plant.
He said the Achievement Day exercise will also link agricultural events with entrepreneurial training for the participating clubbites, adding that each winner in the animal care competition will be given an animal to manage and care for, as part of the entrepreneurial training.
Noting that the 4-H organization in Portland will be working closely with the winners of the competitions, to ensure that they remain focused and continue with the projects in which they are involved, he said they will be provided with the necessary training to widen their knowledge of the respective project and to develop as good entrepreneurs.
Declaring that all arrangements are in place for a successful day of activities, Mr. Anderson paid tribute to the various individuals and organizations which have been working with 4-H clubbites in the parish, to prepare them for their participation in the event.
Encouraging the 4-H clubbites in Portland to continue to do their best to ensure that the exhibition, display and competitions are of the best quality, he said he was extremely appreciative of the role being played by the 4-H Leaders Association, the teachers and community workers in the various schools and communities, to mould the lives of 4-H clubbites and keep the organization alive in Portland.
