Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, has hailed the contributions to public service by Minister of Transport, Works and Housing, Dr. the Hon. Omar Davies, as outstanding and a model for emulation.

Mrs. Simpson Miller, who was among a throng of national and community leaders, who heaped praises on the South St. Andrew Member of Parliament for his 21 years of service as a representative, at a  ceremony held on February 7 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, in New Kingston, said Dr. Davies “has accomplished stellar development work for South St. Andrew.”

She highlighted that under his former watch as Minister of Finance and Planning, there was a major decline in poverty levels in Jamaica, while he managed the country’s economic policy. “He built solid foundations on which we are now building,” she noted.

“Today, he continues to positively transform the country’s road network and transport system, while making great strides in housing development,” the Prime Minister said.

In his tribute, former Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Edward Seaga, described the guest of honour as a “good MP”, and told the audience that “Omar has my best wishes for his future endevours, and all the things he undertakes.”

“He has some very important projects that are assigned to him, and my best wishes go to him for getting those projects on the road, and off the ground,” Mr. Seaga said.

For his part, former Prime Minister, the Most Hon. P.J. Patterson,  lauded the Parliamentarian for his investment in education. Mr. Patterson singled one instance when on learning of an issue with literacy in the constituency, Dr. Davies mobilized resources and personnel for a remedial programme.

“He instituted a programme, and within a short space of time, the number of people who were passing to traditional schools had quadrupled. Omar Davies’ South St. Andrew legacy is the restoration of dignity to its people; the strengthening of confidence, the instilling of hope, the belief and proof that with hard work and education, there are better days ahead,” Mr. Patterson said.

Dr. Davies was also lauded for developing sporting institutions and talents in his constituency, and for reducing tensions between opposing political supporters.

In his reply, Dr. Davies said he has seen amazing changes that have taken place in the area.

“I am aware of the transformative power of investing in education, and you can see it within a short time,” the Minister said.
