PM Golding calls on United Nations for Agreement on Restriction on Trade of Small Arms

September 28, 2010

The Full Story

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has urged the United Nations to address illegal transnational trade in firearms with urgency as it hampered the efforts of nations like Jamaica to reduce crime and violence.
Making his contribution to the United Nations General Assembly this morning (September 27), Mr Golding noted that although Jamaica had adopted a multi-faceted approach to tackle crime and violence, including social intervention and social transformation initiatives to create new opportunities for youth, the transnational nature of organized crime, requires cross-border collaboration.
He said that the efforts by the High-Level meeting on Transnational Organized Crime and the Fourth Review Conference on Small Arms and Light Weapons would be strengthened by the conclusion of a legally binding instrument to curtail the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons and ammunition.
