The National Irrigation Commission (NIC) has been lauded for its crucial support to farmers, especially during times of drought, by State Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Franklin Witter.

Addressing a commissioning ceremony for two water trucks at the NIC’s Hounslow office in St. Elizabeth, on April 26, he cited the entity’s contribution to ensuring a reliable water supply for agricultural production in the parish, especially in the southern belt.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank and commend the National Irrigation Commission. I remember when I was growing up and when the drought came along, there was no NIC for us to call on,” Mr. Witter said.

“However, I can say today that I am very happy and proud with the work that is being done,” he added.

The State Minister commended the NIC for its proactive response to recent drought conditions in St. Elizabeth.

He praised the Commission for consistently addressing the challenges faced by farmers, noting that in the past two years the NIC has been a reliable partner in providing essential support.

The two new trucks have a capacity of 4,491 gallons each and the ability to pump 500 gallons per minute. They were purchased for $37 million and will serve farmers in Malvern, Top Hill, Newell, Junction, Flagaman, Lacovia and other areas.

“We see it as very important to have these trucks take water to the people who are engaged in agricultural production. I know that these two water trucks are going to make a big difference,” Mr. Witter said.

He urged stakeholders to ensure the proper maintenance of the units and other resources necessary to boost agricultural output and mitigate the impact of climate change on farming communities.
