Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, has highlighted the importance of multilateralism and building cooperation among nations to address pressing global challenges.
“In this increasingly complex world where so many challenges confront us, it is more important than ever that we work together to find solutions to the problems that we face. It is only through dialogue and cooperation that we can hope to overcome them,” he said.
The Governor-General was addressing the annual Diplomatic Corps Dinner held on March 2 at King’s House.
He noted that diplomats remain on the front lines of international relations, to help “build trust and understanding between nations, and who must work tirelessly to find common ground in the face of competing interests and conflicting priorities.”
In his remarks, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to Jamaica, His Excellency Hugo Verbist, hailed Jamaica as a “reliable partner” that is open for foreign investments in several sectors.
“We also applaud Jamaica for its initiatives and commitment to work together in finding ways to finance and implement Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in dealing as a global community, with the increasingly devastating effects of climate change,” he said.
The Diplomatic Corps Dinner was part of activities for Diplomatic Week from February 27 to March 3.
It was the first time, since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the island on March 2020, that Jamaica was welcoming both resident and non-resident Ambassadors for Diplomatic Week.
