National Rums Awards Inaugural Tertiary Scholarship

Anushka Hurst and Demario Johnson are the recipients of the National Rums of Jamaica (NRJ) Foundation’s  inaugural tertiary scholarship.

The awards are valued at $500,000 each per annum for three years and will enable the students to pursue degree programmes at local universities.

Demario, who is a graduate of St. George’s College,  will be studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Technology (UTech), while Anushca, who attended Jonathan Grant High School, will be pursuing a degree in Chemistry at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona.

Addressing the handover ceremony on Friday (Sept.13) at NRJ’s Ardenne Road location in St. Andrew, Education and Youth Minister, Hon. Fayval Williams, commended the Foundation for investing in the education of the nation’s youth.

“Thank you for stepping out to form this Foundation…$500,000 every year for three years is a huge gift for the future,” she said.

Minister Williams urged corporate Jamaica to continue to support the country’s bright, young talents.

“When companies like NRJ Foundation step forward to make this significant contribution to education, we have to honour them,” she said.

Chief Executive Officer of NRJ, Martha Miller, said the scholarship programme is an investment in Jamaica’s future.

She congratulated the students, noting that the NRJ Foundation is proud to support their educational journey.

“We not only celebrate your academic achievements but your vision for the future. You both have shown a desire to give back to your country, to improve lives and to lead with purpose,” she said.

The NRJ Foundation scholarship programme aims to contribute to national development in the areas of social development and education.

The scholarship will be awarded annually and is open to students living in the NRJ operating parishes in Clarendon, Trelawny and St. Catherine.

Targeted are students pursuing tertiary studies in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
