Murders in Manchester Down 50 Per Cent

By: , June 21, 2013

The Full Story

As at June 15, murders in the parish of Manchester were down 50 per cent when compared to the corresponding period last year.

This was disclosed by Minister of National Security, Hon. Peter Bunting, yesterday (June 19), during his contribution to the 2013/14 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives.

Mr. Bunting, who is also Member of Parliament for Central Manchester, informed that most of the murders committed in the parish resulted from domestic violence.

He said while it is difficult to develop a policing strategy for domestic incidents, first responders are being trained to recognise domestic disputes with the potential to escalate into violence.

The initiative involves collaboration with the ministers fraternal, the police, Northern Caribbean University, and political representatives.

He noted that, so far, approximately 100 persons have been trained as first responders from the communities of Georges Valley, Grey Ground, Greenvale, May Day, and Albion/Hillside.

“They intervene, if necessary, and then refer the case to a pastor, social worker, or community police personnel,” he said, adding that a 24-hour help line is in place as well.

Minister Bunting commended the police and the first responders for the work being done in this regard.
