Mobay Hospital to be renamed for late Dr. Herbert Eldemire

The Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James is to be renamed in honour of the late Dr. Herbert Eldemire.
Minister with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Hon. Daryl Vaz, made the announcement on (October 27) at the post Cabinet press briefing held at Jamaica House. “The hospital will be renamed as the Herbert Eldemire Hospital,” he said.
Dr. Eldemire was responsible for, among other things, the establishment of the Cornwall Regional Hospital, the School of Nursing and introduction of the National Family Planning Programme.
He served as Member of Parliament and Minister of Health from 1962 to 1972 and was chairman of the Jamaica Labour Party from 1967 to 1972. He served three terms in Parliament and retired from active politics in 1980.
As a physician, he maintained a large private practice in Montego Bay for more than 40 years. He was an avid sportsman and was involved in the promotion of sports, especially boxing.
Dr. Eldemire died peacefully at his home in Reading, St. James, on May 20, 2010 after a brief illness. He was 79 years old. Dr. Eldemire is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughters, Jane, Andrea, Denise; son Barney (Herbert Jr.); and brother, Arthur.
