Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Hon. Daryl Vaz, has commended the Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ) on “50 years of unwavering dedication and progress”.
In his message to mark the milestone, which was delivered during Sunday’s (September 1) thanksgiving service at Webster Memorial United Church in Kingston, Minister Vaz said the occasion was a testament to the extraordinary journey that began in 1974, when the AAJ was established under the Airports Authority Act.
He noted that the entity was entrusted with the critical responsibility of managing the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) and Sangster International Airport (SIA).
Mr. Vaz described the anniversary, being observed under the theme ‘Modernising and Growing Jamaica’s Airports – Since 1974’, as a significant occasion, which not only marks half a century of achievement and growth but also reflects the vision, commitment and hard work that have driven the airports to become key pillars of the country’s transportation infrastructure.
He highlighted the AAJ’s vital role in increased annual passenger throughput at the island’s international airports and the subsequent contribution to Jamaica’s gross domestic product (GDP).
“With a vision to build and sustain a world-class airport system, the AAJ has successfully positioned Jamaica as a vital gateway to the Caribbean and the Americas. Its mission – to develop a modern, safe, and profitable airport system – has driven significant advancements in air travel and contributed substantially to Jamaica’s economy,” the Transport Minister said. Mr. Vaz also noted the AAJ’s progression over the years, inclusive of a widened scope of responsibility.
“The AAJ’s journey has been marked by transformative milestones, from the initial management of NMIA and SIA, to the expansion of domestic aerodromes and the rebranding of Boscobel Aerodrome to Ian Fleming International Airport” he said.
Mr. Vaz added that, “the strategic shift towards privatisation through public-private partnerships (PPP) has also played a crucial role in modernising and expanding our major international airports to meet the growing demands of the tourism industry.”
He thanked the AAJ team, Board members, management and staff as well as stakeholders for their unwavering dedication and hard work.
“Your contributions have been vital in bringing us to this celebratory milestone, and your commitment to excellence is greatly appreciated,” Mr. Vaz declared.
He encouraged the team to remain inspired by the spirit of innovation and collaboration defining the AAJ’s journey.
“May we continue to build on this legacy of success and ensure that Jamaica’s airports remain a source of pride and progress for generations to come. Congratulations to the Airports Authority of Jamaica on this momentous 50th anniversary. May our airports continue to reach new heights and serve as a beacon of progress,” Minister Vaz said.
