Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Hon. Daryl Vaz, has committed to creating an environment that empowers women to thrive in maritime careers.

“We recognise the need for comprehensive support systems, including access to education, training, mentorship and networking opportunities to enable women to overcome barriers and reach their full potential in this traditionally male-dominated field,” Mr. Vaz said in his message to mark International Day for Women in Maritime 2024.

The Day was observed globally on Saturday, May 18 under the theme ‘Safe Horizons: Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety’.

Mr. Vaz maintained that the theme underscores the urgency of investing in women to accelerate progress in the maritime industry.

He pointed out that investing not only benefits the individuals but also drives economic growth, innovation and sustainability. Mr. Vaz noted that women have long played pivotal roles in various aspects of maritime operations, including navigation, logistics, research and leadership.

“Their expertise, creativity and dedication are indispensable in driving innovation and progress in this vital industry,” he added.

The Transport Minister, who shoulders responsibility for maritime affairs in Jamaica, cited studies that show that gender-diverse teams lead to better decision-making and improved business outcomes.

“By harnessing the talents and perspectives of women, we can unlock new opportunities, foster creativity and drive positive change within the maritime industry and beyond,” he stated.

Mr. Vaz assured that “through collaborative efforts with stakeholders, including the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, we will continue to champion policies and initiatives that promote gender equality and diversity in maritime”.

“By fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment, we can build a more resilient, inclusive and prosperous maritime sector for generations to come,” he added.
