Mike Henry Opens Fisherman’s Village in Falmouth

Minister of Transport and Works, Hon. Mike Henry, handed over the keys to the new Fisherman’s Village in Falmouth, Trelawny to the Parish Council and, simultaneously, declared the facility open on Thursday (July 16).
The $9 million facility consists of two buildings: one housing office space and male and female bathrooms, as well as storeroom space; and the other offering restaurant facilities, with kitchen and dining terraces, and two thatched kiosks located on the beach for customer comfort.
Constructed by the Port Authority of Jamaica, which falls under the Ministry of Transport and Works, the facility will accommodate the relocation of more than 100 fisherfolk from another section of the town.
The relocation was necessary to facilitate the construction of a cruise ship pier in Falmouth, to accommodate a new class of mega liners being introduced by Royal Caribbean Cruise Limited.
Mayor of Falmouth, Councillor Colin Gager, collected the keys to the fishing village on behalf of the Trelawny Parish Council.

In his address, Mr. Henry outlined some of the benefits to be derived from the construction of the new pier, including extensive landside development catering to visitors from the mega liners.
He also congratulated the fishing community for their matured approach to the relocation process.
Mr. Henry said that more than 2,000 jobs, including 500 permanent posts on the landside development, will be triggered by the construction of the pier.
“These buildings represent the first element in the upgrading and modernising of the infrastructure of Falmouth, which will flow from the establishment of the new cruise pier,” Mr. Henry said.
“That development, along with a number of other projects, is likely to promote the re-emergence of Falmouth as a vibrant place and an important centre of the hospitality sector and business and, indeed, the renaissance of Falmouth,” he explained.
