The Full Story
Even when others have forgotten, Members of Parliament continue to remember the valour displayed by our servicemen and servicewomen in years past. The Remembrance Day observance took place on Tuesday, November 3, during the meeting of the House of Representatives.
This initiative began in 2005 when Mr. Peter Williams, Chairman of the North East District of the Jamaica Legion, approached the Hon. Michael Peart, Speaker of the House of Representatives, in an attempt to promote participation by Members of Parliament (M.P.s) in Jamaica’s Remembrance Day activities.  Speaker Peart then invited Sgt. Williams to mark Remembrance Day at Gordon House by leading an exhortation recalling the sacrifice of Jamaica’s fallen soldiers, during a brief suspension of the meeting of the House.
Since that time Mr. Williams has faithfully carried out this charge and every year, in addition to leading the exhortation in the Chamber, Mr. Williams also distributes poppies and solicits contributions for the Curphey Home (for ex-servicemen) from M.P.s, members of staff, and visitors to Gordon House.
