Media Centre set up at Hilton Hotel to Provide Information on Joint Police/Military Operations

Minister with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Hon. Daryl Vaz, has announced the establishment of a Media Centre at the Hilton Hotel, in Kingston, to provide the public and members of the media with accurate and regular updates on the joint police/military operations currently taking place in parts of western Kingston.
The Minister made the disclosure, today (May 25) during a press briefing, held at Jamaica House.
The press centre will be in place for a period of 10 days, or until further advised, and will be opened from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily.
“There will be regular media updates in terms of bulletins, which we intend to issue in the morning, midday and in the afternoon, as well as press briefings, if and when necessary,” Mr. Vaz said.
“We feel it important to make sure that we keep the nation informed by way of these bulletins, which will be prepared by the media centre,” he emphasised.
The Minister said the centre will involve personnel from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Jamaica Information Service (JIS) and the Ministries of Information, Tourism, Foreign Affairs and National Security.
Mr. Vaz pointed out that the media centre is being set up in light of the inaccurate and misleading information circulating via informal information sources, such as Twitter and Facebook.
Meanwhile, the Minister also announced the establishment of a Complaints Hotline for residents to register any concerns they might have regarding the current operations in the West Kingston community of Tivoli Gardens. Residents are advised to call 946-1248 to register their concerns.
He further informed that the Prime Minister, the Hon. Bruce Golding, has asked the Public Defender, Earl Witter, and the Political Ombudsman, Bishop Herro Blair, to visit Tivoli Gardens today (May 25), to conduct an independent assessment of the operations being carried out by the security forces.
He said they have been requested to ascertain the precise number of persons who have been killed or injured. “I am pretty sure that that report will be available in short order,” the Minister said.
