The water supply systems in three major towns across the island are slated to undergo significant improvement following Cabinet’s approval of a contract valued at almost $900 million for rehabilitation services.
Minister of Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, who made the disclosure at last week’s Jamaica House press briefing held at the Office of the Prime Minister, said the contract has been awarded to EGIS AV and N.O. Whyte and Associates Ltd.
The company is expected to provide consultancy services for the rehabilitation and improvement of water supply systems in Old Harbour, St. Catherine; May Pen, Clarendon; and Mandeville, Manchester, as well as the construction of a new pumping system from Ferry to Red Hills.
The specific objectives of the project include the provision of 100 per cent water supply coverage in the three towns to meet current and future demand; improvement in the reliability of water supply in the Red Hills to Forest Hill areas; the construction of a new pumping system; as well as the installation of distribution pipes.
The contract is to run for 36 months and the work is part of the Government of Jamaica, the National Water Commission and the Inter-American Development Bank’s Water Supply and Improvement Project.
