The Full Story

Refurbishing work has been completed at the Leila Robinson Netball Courts at Independence Park, ahead of next month’s Caribbean Under-16 Championships.
The lighting fixtures, seats, stands and playing surfaces were refurbished at a cost of $800,000. Electrical Consultant to Independence Park Limited, Eric Hudson, said the courts are now of a standard that can be used for international competition.
President of the Jamaica Netball Association (JNA), Marva Bernard, welcomed the upgrades and said “the team would continue to make (the country) proud.”
Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Olivia Grange, said refurbishing work will soon commence on the basketball court, as well. Among the works to be done are repairs to the stands, lighting fixtures, scoreboard and playing surface.
General Manager of Independence Park Limited, Major Desmond Brown, said while very little money is made from the use of the pool and courts, it is important to have them maintained to facilitate the development of young athletes.
