Ten students from the Brown’s Hall Primary School in rural St. Catherine have benefited from a donation of tablets, which will enable them to access online tools to support learning.
The tablets were provided under a partnership between the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) and the Digicel Foundation.
A package containing JIS publications was also presented to the school.
At the handover ceremony held at the school on Monday (March 21), Principal (Ag) Janette Morgan, said that the institution is “grateful because it will make education more accessible to our students”.
She noted that some of the students will use the tablets to take part in the Ministry of Education and Youth’s National Extra Lessons Programme, which is among initiatives aimed at addressing learning loss due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
She expressed gratitude for the tablets.
“Your contribution will help us to accomplish our school’s mission, which is to equip all students to function effectively in all areas by exposing them to a curriculum that will raise their standard of achievement and provide for the development of their talent and enhancement of their social, moral, physical and mental capabilities,” she said.
Chief Executive Officer of the JIS, Donna-Marie Rowe, in a message said: “We at the JIS are extremely pleased to help equip our children with the tools needed to continue their education whether online or face to face. We take pride in being the information arm for Jamaica, and these tablets will bring information closer to these young ones”.
The donation was this year’s annual activity by the JIS Editorial and Photography Department, aimed at raising awareness about the core functions of the agency.
