He said that the scholarship recipients have overcome challenges, such as parental neglect, low self esteem and economic needs, to achieve academic excellence and display exemplary behaviour.
Mentees in the mentorship programme are required to participate in co-curricular activities, maintain exemplary behaviour while obtaining a minimum of a 60 per cent average in examinations.
The five students – Shevasta Powell, Danelle Whyte, Tamika Robinson, Kymani Seymour and Jason Baker – are currently preparing to sit the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).
The programme which is operating under the theme, ‘Success is an Attitude’, has as its primary objective the provision of guidance, support and leadership to students at Vere Technical High who, because of socio economic reasons, need assistance to fulfill their academic potential and develop their social skills.
Thirty-six Jamalco employees, including members of the company’s management team, as well as three members of the Hayes community will become mentors for students of Vere Technical High School.
