Jamaicans benefited from 6,924 loans valued at $24.1 billion, written by the National Housing Trust (NHT) between April 2021 and December 2021.
This was disclosed by Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, as he delivered the Throne Speech at the ceremonial opening of Parliament on Thursday (February 10).
He noted that the entity is on course to write more than 8,000 loans by the end of the financial year, emphasising that the provision of housing continues to be a major priority of the Government.
“The NHT currently has 12,019 housing solutions under construction, in addition to 24,580 housing solutions in planning across the island,” he said.
In the meantime, the Governor-General informed that the first Digital Television transmitter in Jamaica was switched on using the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC 3.0) standard, making Jamaica the third country in the world to adopt this standard.
ATSC 3.0 is an American set of standards for digital television transmission over terrestrial, cable and satellite networks.
“This marks the beginning of a revolutionary change in how Jamaicans consume television services. Our progress towards a truly digital society is well on the way and digital switchover is essential to achieving that ultimate goal,” he said.
