Isaac on the Verge of Becoming a Hurricane

The Full Story

At 4:00 a.m. the centre of Tropical Storm Isaac was located near Latitude 27.5 degrees north and Longitude 88.1 degrees west. This is about 205 kilometres south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River.

Isaac is moving towards the northwest near at 19 km/h and this general motion is expected to continue today, with a gradual decrease in forward speed. On the forecast track, the centre of Isaac will be near or over the Louisiana coast tonight or early Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 110 km/h, with higher gusts. Strengthening is forecast and Isaac is likely to be a hurricane later today.

The Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Isaac.
