Education Minister, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, says that the fatal motor vehicle accident on September 25, which claimed the lives of four students of Holmwood Technical High School, brings into focus, the need for greater discipline on the nation’s roads among persons operating public passenger vehicles, and especially those carrying children.
“It’s important that we use this tragedy to see how we can improve arrangements for our students…we must offer particular training in safety and in many other aspects to the drivers and conductors,” he stated.
The Minister made the comment as he offered his condolences to the family and friends of the students, who were killed in the accident, which occurred in Chudleigh, Manchester. The fatal accident was said to have been caused by reckless driving.
In the meantime, Rev. Thwaites said a team from the Ministry’s regional office has been providing grief counselling and support.
“The regional officers have been on the spot, providing aid and assistance and counselling, and they will continue, both with the families affected and the whole school,” he informed.
According to reports, the three vehicle collision, which occurred sometime after 7:00 a.m., also left more than 20 persons injured, many of them Holmwood students.
