Govt. to Embark on New Food Production Drive

March 28, 2008

The Full Story

The Government will be embarking on a new technologically-driven food production drive, supported by improved marketing arrangements to transform significantly, the agricultural and agro-processing sectors.
This was announced by Governor General, His Excellency, the Most Hon. Professor Sir Kenneth Hall, when he delivered the Throne Speech at the State Opening of Parliament, today (March 27).
Sir Kenneth underscored the importance of safeguarding the nation’s food security, by producing more to feed the people.
The Governor General pointed out that the rising cost of imported food not only made the need for increased food production locally a necessity, but “creates an opportunity to produce food that previously, might not have been considered economically feasible to produce.”
“This can only be done by improved efficiency and through the application of new technology,” he emphasised.
The State Opening of Parliament marks the beginning of the new legislative year, which commences on April 1.
