Gov’t to Accelerate Efforts to Reduce Crime

Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Professor Kenneth Hall said today (March 29) that the Government would be accelerating its efforts to reduce crime and violence in the society.
The Governor-General, who was delivering the Throne Speech to signal the beginning of the 2007/08 financial year at Gordon House, said that a number of initiatives would be undertaken to reduce the scourge of crime, to include appropriate legislation, modernisation and upgrading of the law enforcement infrastructure, and concentrated attention on hot spots of violence and crime.
He added that the government would also be “promoting higher levels of transparency and accountability in the Jamaica Constabulary Force through the newly-established Police (Civilian Oversight) Authority to be accompanied by a major review of the Police Service Regulations and the ‘Book of Rules’, with a view to expanding the legal powers to remove tainted members of the Force from duty.”
The Governor-General also added that the government would be “continuing the programme of social interventions in vulnerable communities.”
