Government Will Ensure Rights of Citizens are Protected? says PM Golding

Prime Minister Bruce Golding says government will ensure that the rights of citizens are protected and that they themselves are protected in order to enjoy that right. His comments were made on Sunday (June 15) at a funeral service for two slain constables of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
He said it was not easy for the country to understand the grief and emptiness faced by the families of the slain officers and called on the nation to stand by them and help them during this difficult period. He said police officers were often taken for granted and criticized for not doing enough. He said people must be mindful of the difficulties police officers face and do what they can to help them do their jobs.
Mr. Golding said the police should not be asked to do the impossible adding that issues relating to additional resources and legislative changes need to be addressed. He said the country was grateful for the work of Constables Cornel Grant and Delano Lawrence and that everything must be done to ensure that their lives were not in vain.
In his tribute, Minister of National Security, Colonel Trevor MacMillan, said the brutal slaying of the policemen was painful especially since they were on duty to protect others. He said both men were heroes in their own right, as they were bravely carrying out their duty when they were killed. He noted that Constable Grant had been shot in the abdomen sometime before and had only returned to work four days before he was killed.
He commended the citizens for distancing themselves from the slaying of the policemen and called on law abiding citizens to do more in support of the police as the country could not retreat at this time.
