The Full Story

Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, Hon. Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn, says the Government remains committed to the welfare and development of members of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS).

Speaking at the recent opening of the Carl Rattray Staff College gym in Runaway Bay, St. Ann, Mrs. Cuthbert-Flynn expressed her gratitude to the gathering of correctional officers, staff, and other stakeholders and reaffirmed the National Security Ministry’s dedication to their well-being, recognising the challenging nature of their work.

“We commend you wholeheartedly for your commitment and professionalism in maintaining law and order within the penal system,” she said.
“This gym is a symbol of our commitment to your welfare. May it serve as a reminder of our dedication and commitment to the Department of Correctional Services,” she added.

The State Minister said the new Carl Rattray Staff College gym stands as a testament to the Government’s investment in the physical and mental health of personnel of the DCS, pointing to the importance of providing a conducive environment for staff members to maintain their physical fitness and mental well-being.

Mrs. Cuthbert-Flynn said the facility would help to foster a positive work atmosphere and contribute to the overall efficiency of the correctional system.

“Your unwavering dedication, often going above and beyond the call of duty, has not gone unnoticed,” the Minister noted, adding that there are a series of initiatives that the Ministry of National Security will implement to enhance the welfare of correctional officers.

These measures include improved healthcare benefits, enhanced training programmes, and increased support for mental health services, Mrs. Cuthbert-Flynn said.

The State Minister added that the Government is fully committed to investing in the well-being of the staff and would continue working towards creating a safer and more secure environment for all.

In 2021, the DCS Wellness Programme embarked on a drive to upgrade the gyms located at the Spanish Town Prison Oval, Tower Street Sports Club, and the Richmond Farm Sports Club by improving the overall aesthetics, in addition to purchasing more gym equipment.

During the planning process, the Committee agreed to outfit the Carl Rattray Staff College with a state-of-the-art gym.
