As Jamaica joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Human Rights Day 2024, the Government is reiterating its commitment to protecting and preserving the human rights of its citizens.

Addressing the National Human Rights High School Competition at the Summit in Kingston, on Tuesday (December 10), Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Marlene Malahoo Forte, said Jamaica is united with the rest of the world in its commitment to protect human rights.

“As we observe International Human Rights Day, let us recommit to building a Jamaica where dignity, freedom and justice are not just aspirations but that they are our everyday experiences,” she said.

The theme for this year is ‘Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now’.

December 10 marks the sixth anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Mrs. Malahoo Forte noted that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights document has inspired more than 70 international Treaties.

Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, it sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.

“This was a milestone document. It was the first of its kind that called for universal protection of human rights that would transcend borders, cultures and ideologies. [This shows] that human rights are not privileges but that they are inherent to who we are as human beings. They anchor our personhood and our dignity. My Ministry proudly celebrates this occasion with the United Nations,” she said.

Mrs. Malahoo Forte said the significance of the day resonates deeply in Jamaica, which has a rich history of perseverance and progress.

“Do not take for granted the progress we have made in this little nation. The work of protecting and preserving human rights and freedoms is not to be taken lightly at all when you look at Jamaica’s past,” she said.

“As we make forward strides in creating a better Jamaica and contributing to the world, it is my hope that it is a world where everyone’s rights will be upheld and respected, everyone’s voice will be valued, and every future will be bright,” the Minister added.
