Independence meant that all of Jamaica’s affairs are controlled internally and not by Britain. The management of affairs of the country not rests in the hands of the locally-elected Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister. Jamaicans can now have to rely on themselves to determine their own destiny. Every year on Independence Day, which was previously observed on the first Monday in August, Jamaicans both home and abroad celebrate this transfer of power. As an independent nation, we also honour those who helped in the birth of our nation. Thus during National Heritage Week and on National Heroes Day, the third Monday in October, we honour our six National Heroes and one Heroine. At that time we pay special tribute to the contribution of our forefathers, whose resistance and struggle paved the way for the benefits we now enjoy.
