The Full Story

Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr. the Hon. Dana Morris Dixon, has commended the Board, teachers and other staff members of the Hopewell High School in Hanover for their commitment to the students.

Dr. Morris Dixon, who spoke to JIS News after a tour of the institution on December 4, said personnel at the school are going the extra mile for the students.

“I saw a lot of really hard-working teachers here. I saw a Board that is truly committed to helping the students. We do have children at some of our schools, and in this school, that have behavioural challenges and there’s a lot of work we have to do, and the school is doing a lot of things; there are a lot of interventions,” she pointed out.

“When I say doing a lot of things, I really mean it – from taking our children to their doctor’s appointments because their parents don’t do it. We have a school nurse here who, every single month, takes students to see the doctor,” Dr. Morris Dixon added.

The Minister noted that yeoman service is being given at the school, describing it as “social work”.

“They’re having to put intensive work into the students; they’re having to work with the parents in terms of teaching them proper parenting; they’re having to work with the police to intervene.

The police were here with me on this tour, and they were talking about some of the initiatives they’re doing. They’re looking at [creating] a police youth club and being more involved with the Cadet Corps programme here,” she informed.

The Minister said that while there are other things that need to be done, the good work at the institution must be emphasised, and the Ministry is committed to supporting the school, especially on disciplinary matters.

“It’s a beautiful plant and there are some committed teachers, because it’s not easy operating in this environment but they are thriving and they are committed to these children and helping these children, and we must celebrate schools like that,” she emphasised.
