Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the country’s main road network has been severely impacted due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl, with the National Works Agency (NWA) estimating $10.25 billion in damage.
Mr. Holness made the disclosure during a statement to the House of Representatives on Tuesday (July 9).
“There are approximately 25,000 kilometres of roads that connect the country; 5,000 kilometres are main roads, while the remaining 20,000 kilometres are parochial roads,” he noted.
“While the data and information are still being collected in the field, the preliminary assessment is that over 500 parochial roads have been affected in various degrees. So, in terms of the level of repair that will be needed and the cost, it is significant to our main road networks,” he said.
The Prime Minister informed that the Government was still tallying the damage to the parochial roads.
“Many areas remain inaccessible, complicating our relief efforts, but I should say that the NWA advised me that there were 200 main corridors that were blocked, and all blocked main corridors at least have been afforded single-lane passage,” he told the House.
