Cyber Security Task Force to Meet Next Month

The first meeting of the island’s Cyber Security Task Force is expected to begin next month, June 2013.

The task force, which will comprise a broad cross-section of stakeholders in the private and public sectors, will report to the Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Hon. Phillip Paulwell.

This was disclosed by State Minister in the Ministry, Hon. Julian Robinson, during his contribution to the 2013/14 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, May 28.

Mr. Robinson informed that the mandate of the task force is to create a framework to facilitate the building and enhancement of confidence in the use of cyberspace, through collaboration among all the stakeholders with a view to advancing Jamaica’s economic interests and maintaining national security under all conditions.

He noted that in recent years, both Government and the private sector have reported increasing numbers of cyber security incidents.

He added that the security of the Internet and cyberspace is considered to be one of the most serious economic and national security challenges being faced globally and it is one to which governments must respond.

Earlier this year, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, the Attorney General’s Department, the Court Management System and the Ministry of Justice came under cyber attack.
