Clean-up of Negril a Success

The first staging of the ‘Volunteer and Share’ programme, had its successful clean-up of Negril last weekend (October 9-10), with several members of the community joining in the exercise.
This programme is a collaborative effort among the Office of National Reconstruction (ONR), the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force and the National Youth Service (NYS).
Communications Liaison in the ONR, Tracey Hamilton told JIS News that the group consisted of 45 cadets, and over 200 volunteers from the NYS, ranging from ages 13 to 19 years old.
“The cadets were responsible for the Long Bay beach area,” said Miss Hamilton, noting that a lot of debris had settled on the beach front. “When they were finished, it was like a new beach in Negril,” she added.
Miss Hamilton noted that the NYS volunteers were responsible for cleaning up the Negril community centre, the beach and the lighthouse property. The ‘Volunteer and Share’ programme will make its next stop at Portland Cottage in Clarendon, on October 22 and 23, to expedite the clean-up of that community.
The ONR has been mandated to fully involve the entire Jamaican society in the rebuilding drive, following the passage of Hurricane Ivan four weeks ago; working closely with the private sector, trade unions, corporate groups, Non-Governmental Organizations, churches and the entire civil society, so as to secure their full participation.
