The Full Story

Fifty children will parade as professionals to depict various careers in Jamaica at the National Workers’ Week and Labour Day Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, May 17, at the Greater Grace Temple, 65A Deanery Road, in Kingston.

Workers’ Week 2015 will commence on May 17 and culminates with Labour Day activities, which will be observed on Monday, May 25 and not Saturday, May 23, the date that the law provides for its observance.

The service, which begins at 11:00 a.m., will be held under the theme: ‘Labour of Love: Nurturing our Children’.  Guest speaker is the Minister of the Faith Cathedral Deliverance Centre, Rev. Denise Samuels, who will be representing the Jamaica Association of Full Gospel Churches. Her sermon will be delivered under the theme: ‘Our Children…Our Future’.

Chairperson of the Committee for the Promotion of National Religious Services, Dr. Patricia Holness, said the children, selected from primary and infant schools in Kingston, will lead a procession into the church before the service.

She argued that the focus for the service is appropriate, “since it is the children who eventually will grow up to be adults and who will work in our society.”

“We are encouraging everyone, based on this service, to pay special attention to our children, so that we can let them also know we are depending on them and that they have our support,” she added.

Dr. Holness said the children’s involvement in the church service is important since “it will inculcate in them that work is noble and eventually they will get there and we are promising to nurture them.”

The service will also feature presentations from students of the Excelsior School Choir and the Disabilities Association.

The event is being organized by the Committee for the Promotion of National Religious Services, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Culture.
