The Full Story

The New York chapter of the Cornwall College Old Boys Association has donated some US$1,100 to the hurricane relief efforts in Jamaica, Haiti and Grenada.
President, Anthony ‘Tony’ Barrett presented the cheque for Jamaica to Dr. Basil K. Bryan, Jamaica’s Consul General to New York, at last weekend’s 45th Anniversary Awards Banquet of the Association at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Queens, New York.
Accepting the cheque, Dr. Bryan thanked members of the Old Boys Association, noting that the donation was highly welcomed. He said that the reconstruction effort was going ahead and there was a lot to be done to reduce the impact, which was being felt by many persons.
Dr. Bryan said he was particularly heartened to know that in Jamaica’s moment of distress, “we have not forgotten our (Caribbean) brothers and sisters who are also in distress”.
Jamaica gets the largest share of US$500 with the balance being shared equally between Grenada and Haiti.
Close to 350 persons attended the banquet, at which some past students were honoured for their support of the school, the community and the wider society. Dr. Cecil Aird, Micro-surgeon and Medical Director of the Tampa Bay Hand Centre, Florida, received the distinguished service award. Renville Whittingham received the President’s award (posthumously), for guiding the association through its infancy in the early 1960s.
Jamaican entrepreneur, Cecil ‘Sam’ Wright, owner/president of two Ford dealerships in the Northeast USA, was cited for outstanding community service, while the ‘Man of the Year’ award went to Leonard Hawthorne, credited with turning around the association’s fiscal account since taking over as business manager four years ago.
