The Full Story

The female bathroom facilities at the Black River High School in St. Elizabeth have been renovated and upgraded, courtesy of the Jamaican Diaspora in Canada.

The facility was officially handed over by members of the group to the school, as part of the broader Diaspora Day of Service initiative on June 20.

In her remarks, Vice Principal at the Black River High School, Andria Strong-Moses, expressed gratitude for the upgrade to the facility.

She informed that the renovated bathroom now boasts six stalls and three face basins. Additionally, the space was completely transformed with floor-to-ceiling tiling and new doors.

Mrs. Strong-Moses said the girls’ bathroom now creates a more comfortable and hygienic environment for the female students at the institution.

“We are very grateful to the diaspora at large, especially to the [four members of the Jamaican Diaspora] who were with us. We are very grateful for the renovation,” she stated.

“The students were a part of the handing over…they were so surprised when they opened the bathroom door and went inside. I know that they are going to be happy, especially with the large mirror that is inside there,” she added.

Mrs. Strong-Moses explained that the project’s inception stemmed from a personal connection between one of the overseas benefactors and a female student at the school.

She indicated that upon learning about the need for improved facilities, the Canadian diaspora group acted and coordinated with the school’s Parent-Teacher Association and Principal to bring the project to fruition.

“The project was well executed and in a timely manner too,” she noted.

The Vice Principal, however, pointed out that while this project focused on the girls’ bathroom, the institution has plans to renovate the boys’ bathroom as well in the future.

The Diaspora Day of Service allows members to take part in pre-arranged projects in communities across the island.
