Asafa Powell Breaks World Record in 100 Metres

Jamaican sprinter, Asafa Powell, sped away with the World sprint record in Athens, Greece on Tuesday, when he clocked a blistering 9.77 seconds in a 100 metres event.
The 22-year-old shaved off one-hundredth of a second off the previous 100-metre record, set by American Tim Montgomery, three years ago in Paris. It was at the site of his less than satisfactory Olympic performance in 2004, that the sprint sensation dispelled all myths concerning his ability to deliver under pressure.
The breathtaking performance has made Asafa the 4th non-American to hold the 100-metre world record since 1912.
Speaking with reporters after the race, Asafa reflected on the moment when he realized the race and the title was his for the taking. “In the second round I said I’m going out there to just give my best performance and I went out there, I got out pretty good, so I just said I’m going to go for it and I got it,” he declared.
This achievement crowns a stream of remarkable performances for Asafa this year. At the Jamaica International Invitational on May 8, he clocked 9.84 seconds to run the world’s fastest time of the year. He delivered a similar performance in a June 9, track event in the Czech Republic, where he ran a time of 9.85 seconds.
The Jamaican sprint star also told reporters that his record-breaking performance might just be the tip of the iceberg as he aims to rewrite his own record.He said the event was not a perfect race, noting that had he relaxed more on the last stretch, the scorching time could have been faster.
