Apprehensive Data Controllers Encouraged to Seek Support from OIC
January 12, 2024The Full Story
Data controllers who are apprehensive about the changes brought on by the Data Protection Act, 2020 are being encouraged to seek support from the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC).
These include public authorities, financial and educational institutions, health and security services providers, processors of sensitive personal data, among others, that must also register with the OIC.
The legislation requires entities to implement measures to safeguard the data that they collect, store, utilise, disclose, and dispose of.
It serves to transform the way in which organisations manage personal data and came into effect on December 1, 2023.
Information Commissioner, Celia Barclay, says Data Controllers should embrace this new way forward.
“Compliance is something you should be happy about. We appreciate that in anything that requires compliance, and particularly where we know that there are certain penalties for non-compliance, there is a bit of anxiety and concern among persons. However, appreciate this as a tool… to build trust and confidence, even in your own organisation,” she said in an interview with JIS News.
“Data protection and the DPA (Data Protection Act) are not something to be fearful of. We are here to help, please reach out,” she continued.
Non-compliance can result in harsh penalties in the future.
Considering this, Data Controllers are also being encouraged to initiate their registration on the OIC’s website, which can be accessed at www.oic.gov.jm.
