Added Feature to Commemorate Bustamante’s Birthday

In addition to the floral tributes to commemorate the 128th anniversary of the birth of National Hero, the Rt. Excellent Sir Alexander Bustamante, on February 24, there will be a mini exhibition on his contribution to Jamaica, in National Heroes Park, in Kingston.

This added feature has been organised by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), as a special segment of Jamaica’s Golden Jubilee celebration.

Executive Director at the JCDC, Delroy Gordon, told JIS News that as many schools as possible have been invited, “so that (the students) can get a better understanding of Bustamante’s contribution to Jamaica."

The event is scheduled to commence at 8:00 a.m., with Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen; Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller; Leader of the Opposition, Andrew Holness; Minister of Youth and Culture, Hon. Lisa Hanna, and other government officials, in attendance.

The floral tribute will last for one hour, followed by viewing of the exhibits staged by government agencies, including the JCDC, the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT), and the Jamaica Information Service (JIS).

There will also be a civic ceremony in Sir Alexander’s hometown of Blenheim, Hanover, which is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. “That (ceremony) will have the various civic leaders from the parish participating in the programme, with cultural presentations from students in Hanover, in song, dance and drama,” said Mr. Gordon.
