The Full Story

The Ministry of Education and Youth, on Tuesday (September 17), released the Grade Five Primary Exit Profile (PEP) results to regions and their schools.

Portfolio Minister, Hon. Fayval Williams, made the disclosure during a statement to the House of Representatives on Tuesday (September 17).

“I am happy to report that those children who took PEP four last year, have done noticeably better at PEP Five. That is a strong signal that we will see even better results for PEP Six in 2025,” Mrs. Williams said.

“That was the purpose of having the PEP exams over three years, so that we begin to develop a profile for each student and can use the time between assessments to work with students and strengthen their understanding of fundamental skills. That strategy is bearing fruit,” she added.

Giving a breakdown of the results, Mrs. Williams said that in Language Arts, approximately 68 per cent of students (23,577) achieved proficiency or higher, a substantial increase over the 48 per cent of candidates who sat PEP Four in 2023.

In Mathematics, 47 per cent of students (15,721) achieved proficiency or higher, a notable rise from the 25 per cent proficiency rate for those sitting PEP Four in 2023.

The Primary Exit Profile is a series of assessments that replaced the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT).

PEP provides a profile of where a student is academically, as well as the youngster’s strengths and weaknesses, and readiness for grade seven.

The exam assesses students’ knowledge, in addition to placing increased emphasis on assessing 21st century skills, including critical thinking and communication.
