The Full Story

Between 2022 and 2024, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) Intellectual Property Unit (IPU) seized approximately $3.35 billion worth of counterfeit goods in Jamaica.

This was revealed by Police Commissioner, Dr. Kevin Blake, during the organisation’s quarterly press briefing (virtual), on Tuesday (July 16).

Dr. Blake, outlining some of the “compelling achievements” of the IPU, said that resulting from the seizures, 14 persons were brought before the Court and convicted for breeches of the Trademark Act, which led to more than $10 million in fines imposed by the Court.

He noted, also, that pre-COVID, the Unit destroyed more than $3 billion worth of counterfeit goods.

The IPU sits within the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch of the JCF and enforces intellectual property rights laws in Jamaica, primarily the Trademark Act, the Customs Act and the Copyright Act.
