The Governor-General’s Achievement Awards (GGAA) was established in 1991 and recognises outstanding Jamaicans who have made noteworthy contributions to the country.
Nominations may be submitted on the Governor-General’s Programme for Excellence’s website.
Standard Criteria
The nominee for the GGAA must:
- Be a Jamaican citizen.
- Have an outstanding record of community service.
- Demonstrate excellent academic performance (candidates within the 18-35 years category).
- Not be a recipient of a National Honour or Award
Selection Process
Awardees are chosen from one of three age categories:
- 18-24 years
- 25-35 years or
- 35 years and older
Nominees for the GGAA are shortlisted and interviewed by a committee at the parish level. Three awardees (one from each age category) are then selected from each parish and presented with a medal of honour at a formal ceremony. The National Presentation Ceremony, under the supervision of the Governor-General, is held at King’s House each year.
