World Tsunami Awareness Day
November 5, 2021The Full Story
World Tsunami Awareness Day is observed on November 5 annually to raise the public’s understanding of this natural phenomenon.
‘Tsunami’ is a Japanese word with the English translation, “harbour wave”. These waves can destroy infrastructure, animals and lives. Though rare, Jamaica has experienced tsunamis – one in 1692 and the other in 1907 – each triggered by the country’s most devasting earthquakes, to date.
While the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is prepared to respond in times of trouble, the public is still encouraged to protect themselves and their families. This can be done by paying attention to the warning signs and being prepared to leave for higher ground if necessary.
