The Full Story

Minister of Water and Housing, Donald Buchanan, has lauded horticulturists in St. Elizabeth, noting that they have made significant contribution to the development of the parish.
Minister Buchanan, who was speaking at the 42nd annual flower show hosted by the St. Elizabeth Horticultural Society at Independence Park in Black River recently, said: “It is not easy in what is regarded as the driest parish in the country to maintain this high level of horticultural beauty that has been continuously displayed.”
He noted further, that it was heartening to see the high level of community involvement in the event and informed that effort would be made to upgrade the site of the annual flower show. “We have seen improvements to the main pavilion and I also know that the parish council has established a new committee to ensure that the effort to continue to improve this facility does not stop,” he stated.
Minister Buchanan also challenged business leaders in the parish to get involved in the effort to uplift the showground. “Look at this centre and join in partnership with the council and the parish development committee to see what can be done to further make this place more environmentally friendly and beautifully laid out, so that we can stage many other events that will benefit the people of St. Elizabeth,” he said.
He congratulated the horticultural society on staging the show, noting that it was through the building of certain “critical institutions” that there would be hope for the future.
The flower show was held under the theme ‘Beautiful land of wood and water’ and from all indications, the event was a resounding success. At the end of the day some 70 trophies and cups were presented for outstanding displays of local horticulture.
